Just this week alone we ran several calls where we had to go out and find out why plugs weren't working, why circuit breakers were tripping, and why gfci's kept tripping. Why is this week so special or different than any other week to write about? Well as you know this was Christmas and New Years Week probably one of our homes busiest weeks with parties, events, relatives, and family all coming and going. The last thing any of us want is interruptions during our family and party events with lights not working or plugs tripping circuits or worse yet costly repairs during this week of all weeks. Unfortunately, many of the problems we had to repair this week were the cause of poor workmanship and the result of not using a professional electrician. Why is a professional electrician so much better?
A professional electrician does the insignificant seeming things and all the little things that add up to a quality installation. Here's what I mean..... One of our calls this week was a circuit breaker that kept tripping and it controlled some lights and outlets throughout a few rooms in the home. Our professional electrician found the problem under a deck in a crawl space. There was a junction box that someone had installed and not properly terminated the conduit entering it. The conduit wasn't strapped enough and the connection between the conduit and the j-box wasn't tight or proper which lead to moisture being able to enter the j-box and corrode the wires inside the box thus leading to the tripping of the circuit breaker. A professional electrician would never allow such a poor installation. Why? Because we are professionals for one but we also know the ramifications of a poor installation and how it can lead to a failed installation down the road for taking a shortcut. Sounds simple enough right? Well, here's the kicker.... I'm not sure a non-professional electrician would even know it was a shortcut or that it would absolutely fail. If they did then that's an even bigger problem! Either way you should really let that last 2 sentences sink in.
I have no idea what the homeowner paid to have the original work done but I know what they paid to have it repaired and if they would have just spent a little extra money originally and gone with a professional they wouldn't have had this problem. The reality is you usually don't save money by using a non-professional. The cost of the original work plus this repair easily would have paid for a professional to do it right the first time AND it wouldn't have put his house in jeopardy in the process! Do you really want to save money? Then hire a professional, they WILL save you money and most of all protect your home and family in the process.
